Detailed ASUS Laptop Reviews for 2020

#1: ASUS ROG Strix Scar II

Though only recently launched, the ROG Strix Scar II has already become a fan-favorite amongst gamers and serves both professional and hobbyist with its jaw-dropping features

Here’s all you need to know about this beast.

Sale
Asus ROG Strix Scar II Gaming Laptop, 17.3” 144Hz IPS-Type FHD, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 8GB, Intel Core i7-8750H Processor, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB PCIe SSD + 1TB SSHD, RGB KB, Windows 10 - GL704GW-DS76
  • Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 8GB GDDR6
  • Intel Core i7-8750H Hexa-Core Processor
  • 144Hz 3ms 17.3” FHD (1920x1080) IPS Type Display
  • 16GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM | 512GB NVMe PCIe SSD + 1TB FireCuda HDD | Windows 10 Home
  • 802.11AC Wave 2 Gigabit Wi-Fi | Quad antennas and ROG RangeBoost technology provides up to 30% wider coverage

Features we like

You want to play GTA, Fortnite, PUBG, FIFA, etc. and the ROG Strix Scar II is perfect for them all.

That is because it comes with the power-packed Nvidia GeForce GTX 2070 8GB Dedicated GPU unit that delivers crisp and clean graphics making gaming as realistic as ever.

But a graphics card alone won’t cut it. Playing the supporting role is the 8th Gen i7-8750H Processor and 16GB RAM. These further make streaming easier and let you switch between tabs and programs in a flash.

Adding to this speed is the 512GB SSD which ensures your laptop boots in seconds. Plus, SSDs have higher durability so you do have any overhead expenses even after years of use.

But what about disk space? Well, if you are a serious gamer I am sure you will need a bit more than 512GB, right? Thankfully, the Scar II gives you just that with the additional 1TB HDD.

Another feature any professional gamer considers before buying a laptop is the refresh rate because it can give you a serious edge over other gamers, especially those playing on a lower-grade laptop.

So why do you get this edge?

That is because the better the refresh rate the lower will be stuttering, ghosting and motion blur and guess what, Scar II comes with the highest possible refresh rate i.e. 144GHz.

Talking about the display, the 17.3” Full-HD IPS display makes both games and movies surreal with its ability to capture colors and contrasts just like you would expect from a TV.

And since it has a 76% screen to body ratio, you get more viewing area than you would with other similar laptops.

Even with all these features, one thing that can still sour the gaming experience, even get to your nerves is high ping.

To prevent this, the Scar II is equipped with the RangeBoost Technology that can detect signals from up to 4 antennas and automatically switches to the strongest one (no more high pings just smooth gameplay).

Virtual Reality is the hottest trend and is about to take over the gaming industry and the Scar II lets you make the most of that as well as it is VR-Ready.

Lastly, one feature that truly embodies the feel of a gaming laptop is an RGB backlit keyboard.

Specs

  • Processor: 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9750H, 6-core
  • Processor Speed: Up to 4.5GHz
  • RAM: 32GB RAM
  • Graphics Card: GeForce RTX 2080 (8GB)
  • Battery Life: 3-4 hours
  • Storage: 1TB SSD
  • Display Size: 17.3″
  • Resolution:3840 x 2160
  • Weight: 9.04lbs

What we didn’t like

The 4-5 hour battery life is one of the main drawbacks of this otherwise amazing gaming laptop.

Also, the laptop costs you well over $2000 and thus may not fit everybody’s budget.

Pros:
  • Delivers eye-popping graphics with the GeForce GTX 2070 8GB Dedicated GPU unit
  • It has the perfect speed-space combo as it features a 512GB SSD and 1TB HDD
  • Comes with a 144GHz refresh rate that reduces motion blur, ghosting, etc. to a minimal
  • The 17.3” Full-HD display is both large and crystal clear
  • The 76% screen to body ratio gives you more viewing area
  • It is VR-Ready
  • RangeBoost Technology auto-adjusts Wi-Fi signal to the strongest antenna
  • It has an RGB Backlit keyboard
Cons:
  • The battery life isn’t that great as it lasts just 4-5 hours
  • Getting the Scar II will cost you over $2000
  • It is on the heavier side as it weighs about 9lbs

Asus TUF FX505DT Gaming Laptop (The Cheaper Alternative)

Just because you do not want to spend big it does not mean you cannot enjoy multiplayer games like Fortnite or Overwatch with your friends.

The Asus TUF FX505DT may not be the beast The ROG SCAR II is but for one that costs about $700, it sure does pack a punch.

Asus TUF FX505DT Gaming Laptop, 15.6” 120Hz Full HD, AMD Ryzen 5 R5-3550H Processor, GeForce GTX 1650 Graphics, 8GB DDR4, 256GB PCIe SSD, Gigabit Wi-Fi 5, Windows 10 Home, FX505DT-AH51, RGB Keyboard
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 4GB graphics (base: 1395MHz, Boost: 1560MHz, TDP: 50W)
  • Quad-core AMD Ryzen 5 r5-3550h processor
  • 15.6” 120Hz full HD (1920x1080) IPS-type display
  • 256GB NVMe SSD | 8GB DDR4 RAM | Windows 10 Home
  • Gigabit wave 2 Wi-Fi 5 (802.11AC)

Features we like

It has a 120GHz refresh rate,  a rare feature in mid-level laptops as most often brands cut down prices with a 60GHz refresh rate.

The laptop also comes with a GTX 1650 4GB GPU unit which is powerful enough for quite a lot of games like Fortnite, Overwatch and even GTA V or the latest FIFA, etc. (on slightly lower graphics settings though).

The 15.6” Full-HD display again is immersive especially because of the NanoEdge Design which means it has a minimal bezel. You can even view the screen clearly at multiple angles allowing you to view movies and play games more comfortably.

With 2 dedicated tunnels and a fan, the laptop also does a great job at staying cool and expelling dust and dirt particles which in turn, is great news for your laptop’s durability.

It also has an SSD further adding to the durability of the laptop due to minimal functioning parts. And as you already know, SSDs tend to way faster than HDDs.

Another feature where it outdoes the Scar II is the battery life as this ASUS laptop gives you a backup of about 7-8 hours. Thus giving you the flexibility to play games without worrying about power outlets all the time.

Specs

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 R5-3550H
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Resolution: 1920×1080
  • Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 1650 (4GB)
  • Battery Life: 7-8 hours
  • Storage: 256GB SSD
  • Display Size: 15.6”
  • Weight: 4.85 lbs

What we didn’t like

While the AMD processor is pretty good, I always prefer an Intel Processor mainly because they are better gaming due as most processors can turbo boost to about 4.5GHz or 3.5GHz when called upon.

But considering you play games on lower graphics or opt for games with lower config, it should be no issue.

Also, 256GB isn’t a low of space considering you the fact that your OS and games will be installed on it thus requiring you to upgrade in the near future or take constant backups.

It also does not feature a Type C port so adding a docking station will be tough

Pros:
  • It supports a 120GHz refresh rate which is rare in cheaper gaming laptops
  • The GTX 1650 4GB GPU unit supports games like Fortnite, Overwatch, etc
  • NanoEdge design gives you thinner bezel for an engaging display
  • Wide viewing angles ensure you get a clear view at multiple angles
  • SSD increases laptop durability and speed
  • It gives a good 7-8 hour battery backup
  • Comes with an RGB Backlit keyboard
  • It is also lightweight and thus very portable
Cons:
  • An intel processor would have been a better choice for gaming
  • Attaching a docking station is tough as it lacks type C port
  • Low on storage space
