Detailed Reviews of Dell Laptops

1: Dell Alienware 17.3” Gaming Laptop

You can tell that the Alienware range of laptops is tailor-made for gaming not just because of its high-end features but from its very design and build.

But let’s dig into the features first (after all, this is what really breaks or makes a laptop).

2019 Dell Alienware 17.3" FHD IPS High Performance Gaming Laptop | Intel Core i7-8750H Six-Core | 32GB DDR4 RAM | 512GB SSD Boot + 1TB HDD | GeForce GTX 1070 8GB | Backlit Keyboard | Windows 10
  • 8th Generation Intel Core i7-8750H Processor (6-Core, 9MB Cache, 2.2 GHz Up To 4.1GHz), 32GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB SSD Boot + 1TB HDD
  • 17.3" Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS Anti-Glare LED-Backlit Display, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 OC with 8 GB GDDR5 VRAM
  • 802.11a/b/g/n/ac (2x2), 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth 5.0, MaxxAudio, Webcam: 2.07 MP Photo / 1080p Video
  • 1 x Thunderbolt 3, 1 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C, 2 x USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A, 1 x HDMI 2.0, 1 x Mini DisplayPort 1.3, 1 x Docking Connector, 1 x Combo Headphone / Microphone Jack, RJ-45 Ethernet
  • Backlit Keyboard, Windows 10 Home, 6-Cell 99 Whr Battery, 9.74 lbs, Epic Silver

Best Features

While most laptops will have a powerful processor and RAM, the one thing that separates a gaming laptop from them is the GPU unit.

You cannot be expecting to play the latest titles like FIFA 20, GTA V, God of War, NFS, etc. on an integrated graphics card, right?

This is why the Alienware laptop comes with a GTX 1070 graphics card with an 8GB Dedicated RAM that gives you speed and graphics any gamer craves.

And supporting that powerful GPU unit is the i7-8750H Six-Core and the whopping 32GB RAM that are the ultimate combination of speed and power (oh yeah, this one’s an absolute beast).

Okay, so here’s the problem with most SSDs. While they give the laptop a speed boost, they lack the space. This is why Alienware combines the best of both worlds.

Yup, they not only include a 512GB SSD but also a 1TB HDD so get boot time and programs load much faster but there is also ample room for all the music, games, videos, etc.

Plus, it is a 17.3” large Full-HD screen so you get the best viewing experience whether you are gaming or streaming your favorite movie on Netflix.

And all those hours of constant viewing won’t give you red, tired eyes either since the screen has an anti-glare coating.

Also, you can go on all night even in the dark as it has a backlit keyboard that also adds to the feel of a gaming laptop.

Oh, and did I tell you that it also allows you to dive deep into the world of virtual reality and experience gaming as you have never before? (your gaming experience is about to get a whole lot real).

Lastly, the laptop also has good speakers but nothing beats the quality of gaming headsets when it comes to hearing intricate noises like footsteps and communicating with teammates.

Drawbacks

One small drawback about this laptop is the battery life. Like any powerful laptop, even this lasts for not more than 4-5 hours so do not forget to carry your charger along.

Also, it is on the heavy side as it weight about 9lbs so carrying it around isn’t going to as easy as it is with the MacBook or other portable laptops.

Pros:
  • Designed to deliver a top-notch performance when it comes to gaming
  • With its dedicated GPU, powerful processor and large memory, it can run kinds of gaming titles
  • Comes with a backlit keyboard for hassle-free gaming in the dark
  • It is VR ready
  • The large 17.3” full-HD IPS display delivers excellent colors and contrast
  • It has an anti-glare coating to protect your eyes from strain
  • With 1TB HDD and 512GB SSD, it gives you both space and faster boot time
  • Speakers are also pretty good
Cons:
  • On the heavier side so carrying it around can be tough
  • Longer battery life would have been ideal

#2: Dell XPS 15 9570

Not a big fan of the Alienware series? Well, you can still have a laptop powerful enough whether you want to be gaming, programming or even video editing with Dell’s latest beast, the XPS 15.

Dell XPS 15 9570-8th Generation Intel Core i7-8750H Processor, 4k Touchscreen display, 16GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM, 512GB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti, Windows 10 Home, Gaming Capable
  • The virtually border less display maximizes screen space by accommodating a 15.6 Inches Display inside a laptop closer to the size of a 14 inches, thanks to a bezel measuring just 5.7 millimeters
  • Beautiful from any angle: The anti reflective screen combined with superior 400 nit brightness frees you to enjoy your entertainment outdoors. Plus, the IPS panel provides a wider viewing angle, so you can share your screen without missing a thing
  • With the UltraSharp 4K Ultra HD display (3840 x 2160), you can see each detail of every pixel without needing to zoom in. You can edit images with pinpoint accuracy without worrying about blurriness or jagged lines

Best Features

What I like most about the XPS has to be its almost 15.6-inch borderless display which makes viewing movies, games, videos or even editing them a surreal experience by giving you a larger viewing area.

Furthermore, it is a freaking 4k display which means you details without having to zoom in and out constantly. Plus, it also produces wider color gamut i.e. 16 million colors so you get every color gradient with the utmost depth and dimensions while the image and videos remain smooth and clear.

But that’s not all.

It is perfect for outdoor viewing as well and does not let even the sunniest of days spoil the mood with its 400 nits bright display that gives you clear and sharp images anytime, anywhere.

And since it is an IPS panel it also gives you wider viewing angles so you can binge-watch your favorite shows while on the bed, couch, etc.

To top that, Dell has also introduced the Dell Cinema which lets you adjust colors, brightness, sound to best suit your viewing experience.

It also allows you to adjust bandwidth for the streams so you can binge on the latest season of Stranger Things or Vikings, etc. without any interruption.

But display alone won’t cut it, this is why it is also equipped with the GeForce GTX 1050Ti and an 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8750H Processor that allows you complete with the most complex of tasks in minutes and play the latest of titles like Fifa 2020, GTA V, etc.

Add to that the 16GB RAM and you can play games, open multiple tabs at once and watch movies without any lag or speed slow-down (you want your laptop to be fast and the XPS 15 is just that).

Then there is the 512GB SSD as well which ensures your laptop takes mere seconds to boot while giving you ample space to install the windows, other programs and have all your images and videos on it without having to take constant backups.

Also, with the Dell XPS 15, you get to be on the right side of the environment as over 90% of the laptop can be reused and almost the entire laptop is manufactured using recycled plastic from the oceans.

But that does not mean it won’t last you long. The Aluminum chassis and carbon fiber palm rest along with the Corning Gorilla Glass 4 mean that the XPS 15 can take a beating whether it is rigors of daily life or traveling.

Lastly, it gives you a battery life of 8-10 hours which means you do not have to worry about carrying your charger everywhere.

Drawbacks

The Dell XPS 15 is one of Dell’s best laptops and thus there isn’t much to fault except that it is also on the higher side of the price range.

Plus, it tends to heat a little bit when used for long hours but nothing that should be too worrying.

Pros:
  • Comes with 4k 15.6-inch display so you get excellent details
  • Dell Cinema automatically adjusts colors, brightness, and sound for gaming and movies
  • You can also adjust bandwidth for fast streaming
  • It has the highest screen to body ratio making the viewing vivid and surreal
  • It has the ideal processor, RAM, and Graphics card for high-end gaming and tasks
  • The 512GB SSD provides both speed and space
  • Aluminum chassis and carbon fiber palm give it excellent durability
  • The screen also does not crack easily as it is a corning gorilla 4 glass display
  • The battery lasts for 8-10 hours
Cons:
  • Heats up slightly when used for long hours
  • It will cost you over $1500

  • 802.11ac, WiFi, Bluetooth, NO Optical Drive, 720p Webcam, Mic, and Stereo Speakers
  • 360° Hinge, 2 in 1 Laptop/Tablet, Chrome OS, 3-Cell Battery

Best Features

First and foremost, this is a convertible Chromebook which means you can go from using it as a full-fledged laptop to studio mode to even a tablet mode in seconds thanks to the 360-degree adjustable hinge.

This feature allows you to enjoy movies, TV series or even do that little bit of work from anywhere. From the couch, bed, toilet seat (just in case you use your laptop there) to even flights where you can be seriously cramped for room, the Chrome can be used at all times.

Further ensuring that is its compact and lightweight build as it weighs a mere 4 pounds so barely ever feel the weight of carrying it.

And if you thought it is going to be slow as it is cheap, think again. The Chromebook features a 32GB SSD and also a 4GB RAMs so whether it is booting, switching between tabs or streaming videos, you can do it without any annoying delays.

Furthermore, it also has an Intel Celeron N3060 processor and turbo boosts to about 2.48GHz (for a Chromebook costing less than $250, that is pretty darn impressive).

Apart from that, the 11-inch HD display (1366 x 768) does not disappoint either and can even handle a bump or two as it is made using Corning Gorilla Glass NBT.

You also get free access to Google Docs or you can also turn to the Free Embedded Quick Office Editor just in case you need to make a few last-minute edits to the presentation or article or need to whip up something on your travels.

Drawbacks

Well, clearly, it is not the most powerful of laptops and being a Chromebook does not support most Windows programs as well which limits its capabilities.

Pros:
  • It is a convertible Chromebook and thus can be used in tablet, laptop or tent mode
  • This makes it one of the most convenient to use Dell Chromebooks on the market
  • It will cost you less than $250
  • Compactly build and weighs just 4lbs
  • Corning glass display protects it from breaking easily
  • You get free access to Google Docs and there is a free embedded Quick Office Editor when needed
  • The 32GB RAM makes booting and switching between apps quick
  • Its processor can turbo boost to about 2.8GHz which is pretty impressive for a budget laptop
  • The 11-inch display does not disappoint either and delivers good colors and brightness
Cons:
  • Not the most powerful of laptops and thus has limited use

#4: Dell Inspiron 15 5000

Well, if you are not looking for a Chromebook and have been priced out of the Alienware and XPS 15, the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 could be everything you have been hoping for.

Yup, this laptop perfectly combines both low cost and high-end features making this one of our favorite mid-range laptops for 2019.

Best Features

This laptop also packs a punch and can go toe to toe with the XPS 15 on most fronts. Why?

That is because it comes with Quad Core i7-8550U Processor with turbo boost technology which makes it powerful enough to handle even complex calculation at excellent speeds.

Add to that the 8GB RAM and you have a combo that allows you smooth multitasking. That means you churn those codes or design that logo while listening to your favorite music or watching a tutorial.

Furthermore, there is the Intel UHD Graphics 620 card. I know it is not even close to the power of a dedicated GTX 1080 or higher spec graphics card but if you aren’t much of a gamer, it gets the job done.

You can still enjoy the occasional Counter-Strike but at a lower setting.

But if you are a gamer, there is also a variant available that comes with the NVIDIA 940MX 4GB Dedicated graphics card that can handle pretty much all your gaming needs.

Another combination I love about this laptop is the SSD HDD combo. Apart from a 128GB SSD, there is also a 1TB HDD. SO you can use the SSD to install your OS so your programs run faster and the laptop boots faster while HDD can be used to save all videos, images, etc.

Oh, and if you need even more SSD space, you can also go for the 256GB variant.

In case you didn’t know, SSDs are also more durable and save on battery life as they have lesser moving parts.

The 15″ Full HD display does match the performance of the Omen or the XPS but nonetheless, it isn’t bad either for a mid-range laptop. It captures a good amount of colors so you should be able to see a good amount of details while watching movies and playing games.

It also has a backlit keyboard so you can just as easily work in the dark as well.

Drawbacks

The fan noise can be a tad annoying especially when the laptop heats up a little but isn’t so loud to make your ears bleed or make you want to punch the laptop so don’t let it be a dealbreaker (you would probably have your earphones on in any case).

The audio is a bit glitchy so you will want to use earphones or headphone when playing games or using Skype.

Pros:
  • The RAM and processor make it an ideal laptop for programming, graphic designing, etc.
  • Comes with different variants so you can choose one that best suits your needs
  • The SSD and HDD combo provides both speed and space
  • The backlit keyboard makes it easy to work at night
  • It is the best dell laptop for mid-range buyers
Cons:
  • Speaker quality could have been better
  • The fan becomes loud as the laptop heats up
  • Not suitable for gaming but you can go for the variant with the
