How Computer Screen Light is Affecting Your Sleep Pattern

Electronics come with screens to help you interact with them. Computers and smartphones represent the most used electronics with screens today, and they are posing a significant problem in society. They are adversely affecting sleep patterns.

You may not know this yet, but every hour you spend looking at your smartphone screen or computer affects your sleep quality on the hours that will be available for you to sleep.

Computers Give Mostly Blue Light

Computer screens are prone to give you a lot of blue wavelength light that is good for you since it makes you stay awake. It is one of the reasons for people being seemingly productive on their desks even in the late hours unless they are physically tired. Computers also offer a bright light that reaches your eyes.

You can adjust the brightness to a level that suits you. Nevertheless, you are still looking at a technology that relies on thousands of small light features that illuminate the screen and allows you to see different text, pictures, and videos as you work on the computer.

Laptops might also come with additional screen lighting options that let you adjust as you work by pressing buttons on your keyboard. The light from the screen is mostly in the blue wavelength that allows you to see an accurate representation of colors.

Wrong Light at the Wrong Time of the Day

Our bodies work with a natural biological clock that depends partly on the available amount of light. Your brain will trigger the secretion of melatonin to cause you to fall asleep when light levels changes and blue wavelength light disappear. Think of the colors of the rainbow and a little art class where you mix colors.

The removal of the blue glow from the mixture of three primary colors leaves you with red and yellow, which give mostly orange and hues of red or yellow as remnants. The eyes perceive such colors as friendly.

The light coming to the eyes is a mix of all colors, but the removal of the blue wavelength of light leads you to see a reddish hue. Having bright light when you are expecting the sunshine or sunset colors in your environment confuses your brain and your eyes.

Natural Sleep Cycles

Everyone has a natural sleep cycle that adjusts itself partly by the hours you spend sleeping and the routine you try to maintain.

However, the presence of too much lighting just before bed or having insufficient lighting when you are wake can mess up the sleep cycle leading to the development of circadian rhythm disorder.

You need to find a remedy to your computer screen such as a light filter that will ensure late night working on the computer and early evening stares to the screen are not negatively influencing your sleep cycle. You want the brain to produce its melatonin for inducing sleep at the right time every day.
