How to Charge Laptop Without a Charger
If your laptop is out of power and you don’t have a charger with you, you can still charge it. There are many ways to do this, but here are a few options:
Option 1. Use the AC port to power up
It may be surprising to some, but it is actually possible to power up a laptop using the AC port.
You will need a dedicated adapter that can be used with your laptop’s AC port.
This kind of adapter has a larger end that is typically shaped like an L and fits tightly into the outlet.
The inside of the connection has a rectangular hole where you connect your adapter and plug it in.
If you use an external USB hub, you can charge other devices at the same time by using USB cables for each device.
Alternatively, you can take your AC adapter and plug it into an external charging station.
Option 2. Use the DC port to power up
The DC port is most commonly used to power up the laptop. It’s located on the back of the screen in the middle of two wide parallel rows of ports that resemble video game controller ports.
This port is often used to connect a spare battery or a USB hub to charge other devices.
If you have a spare battery, then you can use it just as you would with any other rechargeable battery and connect it to your laptop using clips on your battery terminals, which have a flat edge so they can be easily snapped into place (the clips are typically color-coded yellow).
Once in place, you can plug your battery charger into the DC port and the AC adapter into the charger station.
Option 3. Use a friend’s or coworker’s power source
If you don’t have a spare battery but you have access to a friend or coworker who does, then all you need to do is ask for their help.
Take their laptop’s DC power cable and connect it to your laptop. Your friend or coworker should use an identical type of adapter for charging purposes as your own
The type of connector may vary, but it is usually rectangular in shape with a hole on one side where you can insert your connector.
Option 4. Use a power bank
With a power bank, you can take your laptop on the go and charge it with an external battery pack. It is also useful in situations when you don’t have access to an electrical outlet.
You simply connect the battery pack to your laptop using a USB cable and then connect the power bank to an outlet using its own power adapter.
You can buy universal power banks that allow you to charge several devices at once or buy kits that come with different adapters for different devices.
If you need a USB hub as well as extra storage space, consider buying a multiport adapter that allows you to plug in your other devices and use them while you are charging your laptop at the same time.
Option 5. Charge Laptop with Solar Power
If you have access to sunlight, which is an alternation current, then you can use it to charge your laptop.
You can connect a specific cord that connects directly from your solar panels or a specially designed battery pack to your laptop’s DC port on the back of the screen.
The solar panels, also known as photovoltaic cells (or PV), take exposure to light and convert it into direct current electricity that can then be stored in a battery (or directly used) for later use.
To charge a laptop using solar power, you will need a specific adapter for this purpose. Different types of adapters have different functions, but they are all designed to accept your solar panel and then direct the current to your adapter’s input port.
- The first step is to connect the output part of the solar panel – usually a solar panel – to the DC part of your laptop’s adapter using an appropriate cable.
- Next, connect the output part of your adapter to one of the AC ports in your laptop.
- Lastly, connect your adapter to the input part of your charger. If your charger has an appropriate cable, then you can take it from the AC port on your laptop and plug it in.
Most laptop chargers have a cable built into them that allows you access to the AC power.
Some chargers include extra cables so that you can connect other devices (such as a power bank or USB hub) to their outputs while charging your laptop at the same time.
Option 6: charging from a computer
You can charge your laptop from a computer with the help of a USB-C cable or charger. You can also use an extension cord to plug your cable into the wall outlet.
In this case, before you continue, make sure that the area where you’re going to plug in the laptop is clear of any other electrical devices.
Also, make sure that there’s nothing between the wall outlet and your laptop’s USB-C port as all devices will finish charging after they’re plugged in.
Option 7: charging with a USB cable
If you have a USB cable that you can use to charge your laptop, then you should know that charging with this cable will take longer than using a wall outlet or the computer.
Before doing this, make sure that your battery is properly discharged. This is because leaving your battery on for an extended period of time may result in battery damage.
Make sure that the USB you use is not damaged before plugging it into your laptop’s USB port.
A good way of doing this would be to check if the plastic piece at the end of your cable is intact and lying flat on the surface of your computer’s USB port.
Option 8: using a power inverter
Another way of charging your laptop without your charger is to use a power inverter.
This option is best especially if your laptop dies off when you are on a road trip. You will use the USB Car charger for this.
However, you should know that this method tends to be the most complicated.
In order to properly charge your laptop with the help of a power inverter, you need to have first checked and confirmed that it works properly.
If you’re able to confirm that it’s working, then follow these steps:
- Connect the inverter’s DC plug into an outlet (normally the cigarette lighter port in your car) and then plug in a USB cable from your car into the outlet.
- Next, attach the laptop’s charger cable onto its port. Wait for about three minutes and check if it turns on or not.
- If it doesn’t turn on, you can reset the inverter by unplugging it from your car. Wait for a few minutes and plug it back in again.
- Do this action until the laptop turns on or until your laptop’s battery dies.
The second thing to note is that you should never charge your computer using an AC outlet that’s not intended for this purpose. Doing so can cause damage to both devices.
However, if you intend to use a power inverter, make sure that your computer’s voltage is the same as one of the outlets where you plugged in the power inverter as doing otherwise can result in damage or injury to your device or yourself.
If the above methods don’t work, then you should consider buying a laptop with a built-in USB-C port instead.
It’s fortunate that many laptops today have USB-C ports. This is because charging your laptop without a charger will no longer be a problem. But remember that charging your device will take longer than using the charger cable.
