Are Gaming Laptops Going The Mobile Chips Way? Nvidia Gives a Demo that Indicates This

Chips made on ARM designs have come to the forefront of computer manufacturers’ attention, especially with technology giant Apple, which has decided to move from Intel for its Macbooks.

Intel’s grip on the PC market faces a whole new threat from Nvidia.

At the ongoing Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2021, the company – known for its graphics chips – presented a demo of a game called Wolfenstein: Youngblood running on a Kompanio 1200 processor based on MediaTek and a GPX RTX 3060 from Nvidia.

This paves the way for laptops running entirely on ARM chips paired with Nvidia – class PC gaming GPUs, something that has not yet been seen.

The demonstration will come as no surprise to industry viewers, who have been expecting such a pairing since the chip giant agreed to buy $ 40 billion in ARM last September.

ARM chip designs have been widely used for mobile chips and work on all of today’s smartphones, but the company has also penetrated the data center and supercomputer markets.

Recently, chips made on ARM boards have come to the fore among computer manufacturers, especially with the technology giant Apple, which has decided to switch from Intel for its Macbooks.

The company began the transition last year with the announcement of its own M1 chip based on ARM proposals.

Apple said it plans to move completely from Intel chips to all personal computing devices by 2023.

GPU giant AMD has also worked with mobile chip maker, Samsung, to create synergies between its GPU and Samsung’s ARM chips.

The two companies announced a partnership earlier this year to see Samsung’s ARM-based Exynos chips using the AMD RDNA2 GPU architecture.

While companies like Apple and Microsoft are pushing for personal computing devices to run on ARM-based chips, Nvidia’s GDC demo is also paving the way for gaming laptops on these chips.

This is a major development, as ARM chips are known for their energy efficiency, which allows laptops to last much longer on battery power and allow you to create thinner devices.

These chips should also be theoretically cheaper than traditional PC chips, although Apple M1 Macbooks have the same price as earlier Intel devices.
