What to consider when buying a laptop for AutoCAD 2022

AutoCAD is a popular design software program often used by interior designers, engineers, and draftsmen. It’s used to easily create interesting designs with great efficiency. As with any other similar program, it requires certain specifications to run smoothly and work as intended. Selecting laptops with good components will make sure you never run into a problem while using AutoCAD. The main components to keep in mind when searching for a new laptop are the CPU, the RAM, the storage, the display resolution, the GPU, as well as others.

 Minimum System RequirementsRecommended System Requirements
CPU2.5–2.9 GHz3+ GHz
RAM8GB16GB
StorageHard drive with at least 7GB freeSSD with at least 7GB free
Display1920 x 1080 with True Color3840 x 2160 with True Color
Graphics1 GB GPU with 29 GB/s Bandwidth and DirectX 11 compliant4 GB GPU with 106 GB/s Bandwidth and DirectX 11 compliant

CPU

Similar to most CAD software, AutoCAD also mostly uses your CPU when you draw or draft. As AutoCAD is a memory-hungry program, a high-end fast processor is required. The minimum required CPU speed is between 2.5-2.9 GHz, but having one with a speed over 3GHz is heavily recommended, as it will assure that the program doesn’t become laggy or slow.

Furthermore, if you’re a professional working with larger models and drawings, you might want to look for laptops with 4GHz+. Unfortunately, AutoCAD doesn’t take advantage of CPUs with multiple cores, so a performance difference between a 4 core CPU and an 8 core CPU is barely noticeable if it even exists.

This is because most of AutoCad’s tools and effects are not multi-threaded. When it comes to specific CPUs, if you’re a beginner or you just aren’t usually working with larger projects, any Ryzen 5 or Core i5 from the H series should be more than enough. On the other hand, if you are used to bigger and more complex projects, getting a recent Ryzen 7 or Core i7 would be a better idea, just to make sure there’s enough processing power.

RAM

AutoCAD is ridiculously memory-hungry. It can quickly use up all your memory and slow down your whole laptop if you don’t have enough. 8GB is the bare minimum and is okay for students or anyone who’s only working on smaller projects. If your budget allows for it, it’s always better to get at least 16GB of RAM.

It will support any larger projects you have and improve your rendering speed significantly. It’s usually not worth going over 16GB, and going for 32GB or 64GB as it doesn’t make as much of a difference. Only go for those if you’re a professional and are constantly working on very large projects.

Storage

There are 2 options for storage, an HDD and an SSD. In the case of AutoCAD, you’re way better of with an SSD because of its speed, which is the most important factor in this situation. HDDs do provide more storage space for the same price, but their speed just isn’t reliable enough for AutoCad. So how much storage do you need?

It also depends on the type of user you are. If you’re a student or someone who’s just starting with AutoCad, 128GB of storage will be okay. But if you’re a professional and you’re usually working with several projects at once, getting 256GB is a better choice. Also, if you plan on having a repository of projects on your laptop, get at least 512GB. The best way of using SSDs is to have the OS and the AutoCad on one, and use the other SSDs for any projects you’re working on.

Display

Of course, if you’re going to be looking at your screen for a good portion of the day, you should have the most pleasant experience. With AutoCAD, more screen size is always preferred, as more space means bigger previews, better viewport, and tools that are on a click away. This will, of course, increase your productivity and will make your work smoother and easier. The general rule is to always get a laptop with a display of at least 15 inches.

The 13-inch screen just doesn’t cut it, and you’ll quickly get annoyed, especially if you’re working on any larger project. The 17-inch display is the preferable option as it allows you to do many things simultaneously and speeds up the whole process, but the 15-inch one also proves to be good enough, and if you’re looking for a lighter laptop, this is the way to go. Of course, the higher resolution, the better the experience, so if your budget allows for it, get the best resolution possible.

GPU

If you’re using AutoCAD for any larger project, you’ll have to have a dedicated GPU, otherwise, the viewport will be extremely slow and practically unusable. One option is the workstation GPUs. These are certified by most CAD software companies, and they supposedly have optimized hardware and drivers to deal with the type of calculations of 3D CAD software, like AutoCAD. The other option is the consumer “gaming” GPUs.

They are very similar in structure to the workstation GPUs and some newer consumer GPUs outperform the workstation ones, so it’s a choice of preference. For small projects, the GTX 1050, 1050 Ti, or any of the MX 250, 350, and 450 should be good enough. For larger ones, a 2060RTX or a 3060RTX should be more than enough.

Other Compnents

The main thing to consider, besides the ones mentioned above, has to be the operating system. If you have a Mac OSX, you’ll be able to handle smaller projects, but keep in mind that not all AutoCad software is available on the Mac. On the other hand, if you’re planning to use AutoCad professionally and want all of its features, Windows is a clear winner.
