What’s the difference between the Vostro and the Inspiron?
Both these models of Dell laptops – the Vostro and the Inspiron – are indeed very similar.
And that’s no surprise, considering that they’re both parts of two of Dell’s economical lines for business PCs.
The Dell Vostro line is designed for those who need a reliable, business-class laptop; while the Inspiron line is geared towards beginners or those who want to get their feet wet with a laptop or are on a budget.
In fact, Inspiron and Vostro are targeted at two different markets.
While the Vostro is for those who don’t need anything fancy with their laptops, the Inspiron is for those who want a laptop that also offers a satisfying experience for work, play, and everyday life.
Both laptops are available with either Windows 8 or Windows 7 installed on them.
Dell Vostro vs Inspiron
Size and Display
The Dell Vostro 14 5000 is available with either a 14-inch display or a 15.6-inch display, while the Inspiron 14 5000 is only available with a 14-inch.
The two quality laptop models feature the LED-backlit display type but the Vostro is also available with an HD+ resolution screen.
Battery Life and Weight
The Inspiron has a longer battery life of up to 8 hours, while the Vostro only manages 6 hours.
What’s more, the Inspiron weighs 6.6 lbs, while the Vostro is comparable with 6.2 lbs.
Keyboard and Mouse
The Vostro features a standard keyboard while the Inspiron has a standard keyboard with an angled design.
Both of them have a touchpad and they’re both multi-touch, which means you can use gestures to navigate your way through the operating system.
Display
With 15.6 inches, the Vostro is slightly larger than the Inspiron’s 14 inches.
Both of these laptops have a LED-backlit display for visibility with the Vostro having a 15.6 HD LED-backlit display available in three display types, including the HD+ model that’s good for viewing and editing HD content.
Ports
The Inspiron has a lot of ports to offer while the Vostro only has one USB 3.0 port and a headphone jack on each side of its trackpad.
However, the Vostro is also available with HDMI and VGA ports.
RAM and Processor
The Inspiron has 4GB or 8GB memory, whereas the Vostro has 6GB or 16GB – which means that it’s ideal for gaming enthusiasts.
The processor speed in both laptops is comparable with the Inspiron having a 2.4 GHz processor while the Vostro boasts a 2.3 GHz processor speed.
Hard Drive
The Inspiron and Vostro both have a 500 GB hard drive. However, you can upgrade this space through an external hard drive if needed.
What’s more, you can order your laptop with Windows 8 or 7 installed on it depending on whether you want to buy a new laptop or one that’s used, out of factory warranty.
Graphics Card
Unfortunately, both laptops have the Intel HD graphics card.
However, the Vostro has optional Nvidia GeForce GT 750M 2GB graphics that are excellent for gaming enthusiasts.
Both the Vostro and Inspiron have similar additional features such as wireless connectivity, headphones, webcam, optical drive, Webcam, and microphone, etc.
At this point, you might be wondering what other differences there are between these two laptops.
Colors/Aesthetic Features
The Vostro is available in two colors: Charcoal Black or Matte Gray to match the interior design of your office space.
You can choose any combination of colors to complete your look.
The Inspiron laptop has been designed with a brushed aluminum finish so your laptop is always going to look like new – even after a few years of use!
Extended Warranty
You can also buy an extended 3 year, next business day warranty for about $25 extra if the laptop doesn’t end up being exactly what you had hoped for after a few months of use (depending on where you’re from).
Speakers
The internal speakers pack a rather nice audio feature with the Vostro featuring Waves MaxxAudio Pro that is optimized for the best sound quality possible.
However, if you want to connect external features and gadgets like speakers to it, do note that it only has one headphone jack.
What’s more, Vostro laptops offer a limited number of ports and you’re stuck with just one USB 3.0 port on each side of its trackpad.
Unfortunately too, what’s lacking in the Inspiron is that it has only two USB ports (one of them being a USB 2.0) and they’re both located at an awkward location on the front of the laptop where you’re likely to bump into them when you open up your laptop.
Also, it lacks Vostro’s webcam and microphone.
You also get a 4-cell battery, which means you can keep working for up to 8 hours without the need for an external power source.
It features USB 3.0 ports and a nice 14-inch HD display which is great for daily office tasks.
Which One is the Better Business Laptop?
For everyday business people, these two laptops offer great value for their money.
The Inspiron, despite lacking Vostro’s optional Nvidia GT 750 graphics card and extended 3-year warranty, is still good for everyday office tasks.
However, if you’re the kind of person who needs to work on the go and do some heavy gaming from time to time, then the Vostro laptop is definitely designed with you in mind as it’s been optimized for higher performance than a typical laptop which makes it essential for gaming enthusiasts.
If your forte is graphic design, movie editing, digital photography, video editing, or music production then you’d definitely want to be looking at the Vostro laptop.
Both laptops are available on Dell’s website and while both laptops have similar features, the Vostro definitely beats out the Inspiron when it comes to performance and graphics.

Every advantage that either of these laptops has is something that a typical user would really enjoy.
Both Inspiron and Vostro have excellent performance and graphics. The only disadvantage is that it’s not available in a variety of colors other than black or grey.
The best part about purchasing either of these laptops is that they’re extremely affordable which makes them a worthy investment for any busy person who is always on the go without having to worry about paying for expensive vacations or time off work.
In Summary
All in all, these laptops both have the latest features and are at a comparable price. This means that you can’t go wrong with either of them.
